The mother of four children, Riona Kelly, thought her life had ended after she met an unfortunate accident which left her paralyzed down the waist. Thankfully she has turned her life around and found love again.
Marriage is a wonderful relation where the couple vows to cherish their life and be together in good and bad times. But, 37-years-old, Kelly’s husband didn’t follow those customs and left his wife of 14 years after knowing that she might not be able to walk again ever.
Kelly was rushed to the hospital in March 2015 after she was struck with a spinal stroke that left her paralyzed from the waist down. Not even a week had passed that her husband decided that their marriage was over.
The couple had four children from their married life – Leighanra, 16, Caleb, 11, Izabela, 9, and Logan, 5. She mentioned, “After my husband left me in the hospital, my friend, Sarah, became my next of kin, it was her and the children that supported me during my recovery.”
As per doctors, her past accident that happened 18-months prior to her unfortunate fall might have led to the spine problem.
Adjusting to life on a wheelchair was difficult for the mother especially without her husband by the side.
Life After Accident
Kelly explained that she used to hate herself when she went out on the wheelchair for the first time. Had she been given the choice, she would have ended her life. But, after many hours of physiotherapy, she was able to take her first steps on the parallel bars.
She further told, “I was dragging my body and I had no feeling in my legs but I didn’t care, I was walking and that’s all that mattered. It took me 25 minutes to get up 16 steps, and the same time to come back down again, but I was determined to do it for my children.”
While she was on her path to recovery, Kelly met 35-year-old personal trainer Keith Mason, who not only helped Kelly in her recovery to walk again but also provided her the emotional support which she needed the most at that time.
After working through physiotherapy sessions together, both fell in love with each other and with Mason’s support and motivation, today Kelly is able to walk and jump.
Life With Mason
Kelly and Mason have been together for 11 months now and her children really liked him. She has since completed two marathons with the help of her wheelchair and can now walk without assistance.
